Does your Refugee resource let you examine a character, like Mahmoud, every chapter he’s in?
Does your Refugee resource allow you the flexibility to use Google Slides or Google Forms for discussion/quiz questions?
Does your Refugee resource give you the author’s craft questions that invite your readers to think more like an author?
If you said no to any of those, the Refugee Author’s Craft Task Cards are for you!

Mahmoud’s character deserves to be analyzed not only for the comprehension of Refugee, but for all that his character represents.
When we first meet Mahmoud he portrays the importance of staying “invisible”. By the end, he’s leading his fellow refugees out of a camp towards a more accepting country and safety.
He becomes more and more visible with each passing chapter. Alan Gratz’s efforts to build a character that starts as someone who blends in and ends with someone who stands up is not missed upon my readers.
A Book with SUCH a Profound Storyline…
In order to track Mahmoud’s transitions, the Refugee Task Cards have been incredibly helpful. They provide teachers opportunities to pause, investigate and discuss everything from character development to themes for EVERY CHAPTER of the book!
For example, take task card #4 from chapter 3, it’s clear that Mahmoud has needed to adapt to the unsafe environment he resides in.

The task card questions evolve, just like the plot does. Conflict after conflict molds Mahmoud into someone who is tired of feeling vulnerable and quiet. Chapter 15, as seen below in the Google Slide, adds another notch to the chiseled character development Alan Gratz so strategically put together.
As you can see, these task cards are PERFECT for monitoring a dynamic character using the printable task cards, Google Slides, or the Google Form versions of the questions.
“Mahmoud decided right then and there that he was going to make sure the observers saw him.” (chapter 48).
This pivotal scene deserves the EXACT type of question you need for your readers to answer or discuss. The Google Form version of this chapter, as with all of the chapters, give you the ability to adapt a question as needed.

While We’re At It, Let’s Talk About Analyzing Themes
I don’t know about the resources you use to discuss themes within a novel, I have a hard time finding resources that offer opportunities to recognize themes that build throughout the book.
Especially for Refugee, a theme can not be solely covered in one section of the book. It just doesn’t do this book justice.
There are themes scattered throughout. In fact, the resource called Refugee Author’s Craft Task Card: Theme have identified 60 theme questions specifically to practice identifying and analyzing the spectacular themes within this story.

As if that’s not enough, this resource also has 42 posters of different themes represented in this story. Everything theme from: Becoming an oppressor to Having gratitude to Dealing with loss to Persevere and many more are ready to be printed and posted in your room!
