Chapter 35
Isabel’s story is eye-opening and changes the direction of her story. Ivan dies and this chapter shocks the reader.
There’s so much to talk about and sit with when reading this chapter.
The imagery and figurative language in this chapter is apparent. There were 6 examples of figurative language in this short chapter.
Alan Gratz also has so many symbols within this chapter! Everything from the journey of the song to Ivan to the shark to the sinking prison mentioned.

Chapter 36
The story of Mahmoud’s journey across the Mediterranean Sea left them in different spots with Mahmoud, his mother, his father, and Waleed.
Themes like: keep moving forward, accepting people who are different, be grateful for what you have, be open minded to different people keep showing up.
Themes to me are SUCH a big deal in my discussions because it’s a big take away that could connect to their life.
