Analyze Ch.22-24: At The Mercy Of Someone Else
Alan Gratz really increases the intensity within these chapters!
Between Josef slapping his father to snap him out of his despair temporarily, to Isabel trying desperately to save Señor Castillo from drowning, and then of course Mahmoud getting thrown into the sea from the “boat”.

There’s so much to discuss and so many literary devices to be found within these three chapters not to mention ALL the chances to develop the three main characters!
Whenever the conflicts increase, the character development takes off!

Perhaps the best thing about these task cards is that you can adjust what you want to chat about with your students!
For example, as I analyzed these chapters there were some powerful symbols that popped up. Maybe you’d add other ones or places to pause.
That works out great for these task cards! There’s plenty here to roll out when you don’t have the time to analyze the chapters yourself.
But, also, they are completely customizable too!
And…Let’s not forget about the answers keys included!!!
