Three Journeys Woven Together

How am I teaching Refugee this year?

How will I get all 3 storylines into my instruction?

Is there enough time to get a Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud section done in one class period?

If there is enough time, what will the analysis or discussion look like?

Trust me, I’ve been there

Refugee is certainly a highlight to my reading instruction, but if I’m being honest, it is intricate and hard to plan.

After all, there’s so much to incorporate. There’s a real fear of missing something important due to structure and time.

The craft and pure ingenuity from Alan Gratz could leave some stones unturned instructionally

I do not pretend to be an expert when it comes to teaching Refugee.

Every year, my classes respond differently to the 3 storylines. Every year, I use resources that in my mind give it (Refugee) justice.

Limited Refugee Resources

There really were few Refugee resources that I felt “did it justice”, until the author’s craft task cards became a goal of mine.

I wanted all the literary devices in all the chapters highlighted in some way, shape or form for the whole book. Leaving it up to me to decide how much or how little to emphasize certain literary elements for different parts.

Does that exist?

Wouldn’t it be nice to choose how much or how little to examine the literary devices of a Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud section in the lens that you’d like to?

So many products decide for you…

For instance, one resource I’ve used only talks about theme during ch.13-15 & ch.52-53. That’s it. What if you want to talk about theme during another section of the text?

You’re on your own!

And what about all the intricacies within chapters 13, 14, 15, 52, & 53 that don’t have to do with theme? There is so much missed when you only focus on one topic.

Another Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud part emphasizes character development. After that it’s figurative language, and so on and so forth for the rest of the novel. One literary device at a time.
