Wouldn’t it be helpful if tones like: dire, cynical, hopeful, and so many others were already identified for your students to analyze Refugee?
What if there was a resource with paragraphs chosen from Refugee inviting your readers to identify the tone from that section?
If you said yes to any of those, the Refugee Task Cards have your back!
This resource is like a backstage pass…
-to think like Alan Gratz 53 times throughout Refugee
-to notice & discuss the vibe and word choice every chapter
-to think about how all 53 pivotal task cards in this resource make the reader feel

Let’s take a closer look at tones in Refugee
You might be wondering what exactly is included with these task cards.
I’m glad you asked…
Each resource includes an EASILY printable pdf with the 53 task cards. One for each chapter. You could cut them out. Put them in a center, make them a game, turn it into a contest. An ANSWER KEY is available for all questions!
Each page has four task cards (see the example below). Two cards ask the reader to come up with the tone(s). Two cards have the tone(s) identified so readers can find the text evidence supporting those tones.

There’s also a Google Slides version of the same questions. Maybe you’d rather go over the text as a class, or send the slides for partner work in Google Classroom. All of these are great ways to use this resource.

Finally, there is a Google Form version of the same questions. This option is PERFECT for a quick Google Classroom quiz. The Google Form is yours to change or edit the questions for your needs.

AND there’s more! A recording sheet to catch all your student’s tones & moods! Best of all, there’s an ANSWER KEY available for all questions!

Why the Author’s Craft Task Cards?
As you are probably aware, following Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud’s stories are like a mental and emotional rollercoaster. One minute they’re leaving their homes, the next moment a world of uncertainties show up with barely a moment to absorb everything.
In the past, when it was time to start the Refugee adventure I would go on a TPT search for a resource that offered MORE…
More opportunities to analyze the evolving characters throughout the ENTIRE BOOK
More examples of themes at each turn
More chances to explore all literary devices. Because, in my opinion, readers need more than just a couple of times in a novel to practice a specific literary device.
Designing a BUNDLE with many literary devices seemed like the BEST way to analyze this powerful book.
